Ireland’s Lowry leads US Open by two after marathon day

June 24 23:00 2016

American Johnson will have five holes to play, Spaniard Garcia four and England’s former world number one Westwood three when play resumes on Sunday at 7 a.m. ET (1100 GMT).

Holding a two-shot advantage, Lowry saved par at 14 before extending his lead by rolling in a 10-footer at the next.

“That’s one of the best rounds of my career right there”, Lowry said. He bent over and said loudly, “Come on, Jordan, are you kidding me?” Branden Grace is at one-under with Sergio García and Scott Piercy at even par.

“The last stretch is not the easiest from 15 onwards”, Grace said.

Sergio Garcia had two straight bogeys from the bunker and shot 72.

Lowry appeared to get another bonus when little-known American Andrew Landry drained a long birdie putt at the 18th which meant he would play in the final group rather than the huge-hitting Dustin Johnson.

Spieth is tied for 35th at 4-over 144. Landry has 11 pars, a birdie and a bogey in his round.

Lowry, 29 of Mullinger, Ireland, had told his father on the way to the course Saturday that he “felt very comfortable out there”. Literally just came off the golf course. The top four players get into the Masters. I’m not the player who’s going to go out and shoot 28 under par.

“But I think that’s just kind of bad timing”, he added.

Johnson started the third round with a one-shot lead. He played his first nine holes of Saturday in 4 under par, after a rather desultory 77 on Thursday. He had been 9 back after 36 holes, tied for 45th.

Day, meanwhile, said he is looking forward to Sunday and was feeling optimistic. “So that may (be) physically and mentally a little bit tougher on those guys”. “I know how to handle it, so hopefully, the ball falls my way tomorrow”. “Even though it is hard and stressful, I just enjoy those times”.

Johnson, who three-putted the 72nd hole at Chambers Bay a year ago to finish a shot behind Jordan Spieth, had got on level terms with a birdie on the ninth and found himself in the outright lead when Lowry bogeyed the same hole after finding sand off the tee.

Andrew Landry hits his tee shot on the 15th hole during the delayed third round of the U.S. Open golf championship at Oakmont Country Club on Sunday, June 19, 2016, in Oakmont, Pa. Cabrera’s seventh and final bogey of the second round did not prove disastrous but it put him at 6-over following a 76.

Just that quickly, he was at even-par and reeling like much of the field on a sweltering afternoon when Oakmont became fast and furious.

Other top players were not so fortunate.

“I was quite aware of what was going on around me”, he said. DJ doesn’t address it. It’s ruled that he didn’t cause it to move. If he slips, there will be more talks of monkeys, wobbly putters and U.S. Open pressure as the pack closes in. Rose was done in by a 40 on the back nine in the second round on his way to a total of 8 over.
