Florida State officials did confirm that the senior didn’t join the team in their travels to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl, and cited personal reasons as the reason why Golson didn’t join the Seminoles for the game.
Everett Golson won’t be playing in the Peach Bowl. During that interview, Golson said it was Fisher’s coaching style and success molding quarterbacks that attracted him to FSU.
Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports reports that Golson’s absence from the trip is due to the death of a very close family member.
Maguire has completed 62.1 percent of his 145 passing attempts this season, throwing for 1,128 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.
Golson was supposed to be a backup to emerging option Sean Maguire against Houston anyway, but still, it’s a shame that Golson – who once led an undefeated Notre Dame team to the 2012 BCS National Championship game – will go out like this.
Golson was previously the starting QB for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he got his degree before transferring to Florida State this year. Might that hurt Florida State next season – assuming Maguire is the starter – especially with the season opener coming against Ole Miss?
Sean Maguire started in place of Golson on October 31 against Syracuse because of what the school said were concussion-like symptoms, and Maguire started again the following week in a loss at No. 1 Clemson.
Maguire appropriately referred to his 2015 campaign as a “rollercoaster”, having lost and regained the starting job twice. Two of those interceptions came in the first half against North Carolina State on November 14 – which was Golson’s last significant action of the season. He tallied 546 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, too, despite rushing for negative-35 yards this year with FSU.
