“I think we’ve seen this movie before”, McCain said Tuesday. Former President Richard Nixon was also charged with the first three articles of impeachment for obstruction of justice in 1974 after he refused to release White House tape recordings containing important information regarding the Watergate scandal. But Trump said, “you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight”.
Trump too has complained of unfair treatment.
McCain on Tuesday night said the president is dealing with a pretty smart lawyer, noting that Comey distributed the memo to others.
Chaffetz says the memo raises concerns “about improper interference placed on an active investigation”.
Lu was compelled to make this point after the New York Times published a barn burner of an article based on a memo authored by former FBI Director James Comey in which Comey indicated that President Trump had asked him to stop the investigation into retired Gen. Mike Flynn, which was a part of the investigation into Trump’s possible collusion with Russian Federation. Richard Burr’s intelligence committee – which last week, after months of foot-dragging and general indifference, subpoenaed documents from ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn – can be trusted to give this matter the diligence it deserves, or whether an independent commission is necessary.
Similarly, Graham who has been a harsh critic of President Trump, called initial reports “troubling”, but has not yet called for any repercussions for the presidents’ actions.
Rep. Al Green (D-TX) did so on the House floor Tuesday morning.
The U.S. Attorney General announced Wednesday that a special prosecutor has been assigned to investigate.
Much of the surrounding public evidence – Trump reportedly asked for Comey’s pledge of loyalty, proceeded to fire Comey, and then told NBC’s Lester Holt that the Russian Federation investigation played a role in the firing – confirms the most dire conclusions.
The person had seen the memo but was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. The statement pointed out that the “revelations” surrounding the Trump-Comey story are antithetical to the prosperity of the United States and should be dealt with “scrutiny”. (Like Nixon, Trump has referred to his opponents as “enemies”.) And at the heart of it both men fired the prosecutor leading an investigation into his suspected illegal or unconstitutional activities. The newspaper cites a memo Comey wrote following the meeting. And this one Trump brought on himself by tweeting that Comey better hope that there were no “tapes” of the Trump-Comey White House conversation that could undermine Comey’s account of things.
Since 1991 when Gallup began asking the question, the percent of people expressing confidence in the presidency has collapsed from 72 percent to 36 percent. But Trump should remember that it was the mission to smite the leakers with the White House “Plumbers” unit that ultimately led to Nixon’s downfall.
