His lawyer Lynda Westlund also argued that Soiu did not travel to meet her like in the ’90s.
This time around, Soiu claimed he continued writing to the star in an attempt to gain Paltrow’s forgiveness for his past behaviour. She said that her client was “unique” and “special”, adding that he was also very cogent, according to Reuters.
Earlier this month Paltrow broke down in court as she said she had been left “traumatised” by the ordeal.
Prosecutors say Dante Soiu sent her dozens of letters and packages in the last few years.
Paltrow was the first witness called and authenticated 48 of the letters, many of which contain religious messages and statements referencing her death.
It is the second time Soiu has been accused of stalking her.
Paltrow said she recognised Soiu’s handwriting after having received so much correspondence from him.
Soiu’s testimony was crucial to showing that he had a calm demeanor and wasn’t an angry man, she said.
“We don’t believe that there was a credible threat” that would cause Paltrow to “reasonably fear for her safety, ‘ Westlund said”. “This was something I had been through a very long and traumatic experience with already”. “I wanted to show a new face towards her”.
Soiu testified that he was simply trying to make amends, “I have no desire to hurt her feelings”, he said.
It followed a trial in which the 43-year-old actress read out some of the 48 letters sent to her by the former pizza deliveryman.
The court heard the letters described Soiu’s intention to marry Paltrow and a pair of earrings he sent her in 2009 as a Christmas gift.
The Goop founder had to fly to testify in a Los Angeles courtroom just hours after watching her ex-husband Chris Martin and pal Beyoncé perform at the Super Bowl.
