Larsson leads Oilers past Ducks 5-3 in wild series opener

Ryan Getzlaf scored for the Ducks, who lost in regulation for the first time since March 10, a span of 19 games.

Talbot got a piece of Wagner’s wrist shot, but it deflected off his arm and in for a 4-3 Ducks lead at 9:20 of the second period.

On Friday night, the headliner was clearly Talbot, who stopped 39 of the 40 shots that the desperate Ducks threw at him.

He played to the end of the second period but did not play the third. They are good enough to beat plenty of teams. He followed up a two-shutout first round against San Jose and a wild Game 1 victory in Anaheim by protecting a lead for almost 59 full minutes in Game 2.

Game 2 is Friday night in Anaheim. “Just because they don’t have a playoff game doesn’t mean they don’t have experience”. We really like playing with each other, we like each other off the ice. And they did so often in getting back into the best-of-7 Western Conference semifinals.

The German forward’s empty-net goal capped a four-goal, third-period outburst for the Oilers. I thought had we come in here (to the locker room) with a three-goal lead, everybody’s feeling good and doing the same thing. I see both Getzlaf and Kesler stepping up with their team’s back against the wall and getting a huge win in Edmonton tonight. The Oilers probably can’t afford to allow 40 shots if they want to win again, but I think they find a way to improve their defensive effort.

Jakob Silfverberg, Ducks – Silfverberg came through in a big way for the Ducks with two goals in recording the first multi-goal playoff game of his career.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead on Getzlaf’s fourth goal of the playoffs on the power play at 37 seconds of the second period. He has been sidelined by an upper-body injury since Game 2 against the Flames, and was a late scratch for Game 2 against the Oilers. Ducks D Kevin Bieksa sat out a second straight game with a lower-body injury.

If they plan on winning either Game 3 or Game 4, something needs to change, and they are running out of time to figure it out.
