When law enforcement officials searched through Stephen Paddock’s arsenal of weapons, they discovered that 12 of his 47 firearms were outfitted with a deadly device that allows a semiautomatic weapon to perform more like a fully automatic weapon.

“One of the things we’ve learned from these shootings is often underneath this is a diagnosis of mental illness”, Ryan said.

Usually, weapons used in mass shootings are semi-automatic: A new bullet is automatically chambered after each shot, but the shooter must pull the trigger to produce each shot.
