Late victor puts non-League Lincoln into the FA Cup quarter finals

Burnley manager Sean Dyche is taking nothing for granted heading into the weekend’s FA Cup clash with Lincoln City.

Lincoln City dealt out a harsh lesson to Burnley in the FA Cup and Sean Dyche felt his team struggled with being expected to win.

“They’re (Burnley) a top quality side, drew with Chelsea last week, it’s unbelievable”. “We’re nice and solid but we’re also a threat going forward”.

However, Lincoln won the first ever tie between the sides in the FA Cup, an Intermediate Round replay in the 1904-05 edition of the competition.

The attacking styles and confidence of both teams left the field as an open battlefield but it was Lincoln who proved to have the best weapons in their arsenal.

“We’re going to be courageous, we’re going to fight and give it one hell of a go”.

He said: “My mum and dad come to pretty much every home and away game”.

“Dyche affirmed he would ‘not change because it’s a cup game against a team like Lincoln… the way we’ve worked has served us well, ‘ and insisted ‘I’ll probably enhance that thinking, and say ‘all the details are important, the mentality is vital“. We’re strong from set-plays and we’ve got a lot of players that can win games.

“This is the first time in a long, long time we have been favourites, big favourites, the first time in a long, long time and that is part of our growth”. Our players, I thought, were outstanding. To put in the performance that we did shocked everyone.

“It is odd because last season we won for this, to be more determined than the opponent and play with more heart than the opponent”. If we do all of those things, we might give ourselves that chance.

“We use that (embarrassment of an upset) as our motivation but we go about our work the same day in day out”.

The FA Cup hasn’t been quite so memorable for Raggett’s home-town club, losing on TV in a replay to Brackley Town.

“I am so pleased for them and to be able to share it with them was great”. There are 81 places between the two sides in the league pyramid. It was Burley’s best chance and one that they would look back on in frustration.

“We needed the referee to point his arm in the direction of the centre spot and when that happened it was a fantastic feeling”.
