But lawyer Cruz swiftly retorted that under Trump’s own logic, he wasn’t eligible either – because his mother Mary MacLeod came from the isle of Lewis.
“I saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York”, Trump said Thursday.
“I’m always open to give him an education on what NY values are all about”, Cuomo said on NY1.
Cuomo and de Blasio did not take the statement lightly.
“Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro-gay marriage”, Cruz said, adding that New Yorkers are focused “around money and the media“.
He also called on Cruz to apologize to the people of NY for his remarks.
“I recognize that Donald is dismayed that his poll numbers are falling in Iowa”, Cruz said.
Presidential rival Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned Cruz’s presidential eligibility. Cruz, who moved from Calgary to Houston when he was 4, said he didn’t realize he still had Canadian citizenship until the Dallas Morning News raised the question in 2013.
Cuomo called Cruz’s comments “highly offensive” and “anti-American”.
Trump responded by citing the city’s response to the September 11 attacks.
John Markowski, a minister who was dropping his son off at a public school, said, “It’s insulting for anyone to make a derogatory comment about NY values”.
The Texas senator repeated his “apology” later Friday at a campaign event in Tigerville, South Carolina, again mentioning the same issues as he listed in Columbia. “Throughout our nation’s history, NY has been the gateway to opportunity and the driver of the American Dream – both for people born here, and those born on other shores who come here to achieve that magnificent Dream”.
The Texas senator was asked about Donald Trump’s recent suggestions that Cruz’s birth in Canada could pose problems, given the Constitution’s requirement that presidents be natural-born citizens.
He noted that “New Yorkers may go about things differently” but their values are the same as the rest of America.
Daily News columnist Mike Lupica wrote: “The best of this city is the best of this country, and always has been”.
“The Democrats are going to bring a lawsuit if he’s the nominee”, Trump said.
He admitted to making an error of paperwork, and tried to deflect criticism by accusing the New York Times – who first revealed the non-disclosure – of conducting a “hit job”.
