Lawyers clash with protesters in India over student’s arrest

February 17 20:02 2016

There were over 50 lawyers present on the court premises.

The group shouted “Vande Mataram” and waved the Indian flag. Anti-India slogans were raised at the gathering. It was also discussed that objectionable/anti-national activities of the members of the Democratic Students Union (DSU) have to be curbed by the JNU authorities with the help of the police”, the report states. According to reports, more forces have been deployed at Patiala House Court after the attack. This hooliganism unleashed by the BJP… they may be shouting patriotic slogans… but that is totally to misguide the people.

The court, after hearing the submissions, extended Kanhaiya’s police custody by two days till February 17, he said.

SC regulates entry in courtroom in Kanhaiya case: Meanwhile, the Supreme Court regulated the entry of people in the Patiala House courtroom where Kumar was to be produced.

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested for allegedly raising anti-India slogans at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on February 9.

The press council has sought a report from Delhi police commissioner B.S. Bassi seeking details of the attack on the media persons. It said 25 journalists could enter the compound after proper identification and verification.

The journalist, Tarique Anwar, who was assaulted today works with First Post, NDTV said. Some journalists and students were beaten and had their cell phones snatched out of their hands and broken.

In the largest protest, thousands of students and academics at New Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) boycotted classes and erected barricades for a fourth day in an escalating conflict with the authorities. Journalist unions accused police of standing by during the attacks. A group of lawyers started yelling at us that the teachers are also anti-nationalists…we did not hit back because we do not believe in violence.

Absconding since the matter has turned ugly and an FIR was registered in Vasant Kunj police station, Khalid is suspected to have links with terrorist organisation.
