Host Chis Rock didn’t hold back when he kicked off last night’s ceremony, taking advantage of his intro time to poke fun at the Oscars’ lack of diversity.

DiCaprio had previously been nominated for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), The Aviator (2004), Blood Diamond (2006) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Right off the bat, the symbolism of that let us know that the night was going to be one helluva ride, and Rock delivered that in just about every way. “You often hear that Hollywood is out of touch with the rest of the country, so I made a decision to get out of Hollywood and talk to regular people about the movies”, he said. “We just have to have the political will”. But we had better things to protest.

He joked that “unemployed people” had asked him to boycott the show, “The big question: Why this Oscars?”.

Rock received his biggest and most awkward laugh from the audience during his opening monologue when he said, “I’m sure there were no black nominees some of those years”. Leonardo DiCaprio, who won his first Oscar on five nominations for the gritty frontier revenge drama “The Revenant“, used the platform to call attention to man-made climate change. “They’re like ‘We like you, Rhonda. We want black actors to get the same opportunities as white actors”.

The most anticipated victor of the evening for Best Actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, attended in a classic black tuxedo from Armani, Michael Fassbender in Tom Ford and Sacha Baron Cohen in Dolce & Gabbana.

Nonplussed, DiCaprio responds, “I have to take care of it?”
