“As with every downhill I have skied this year, I am learning so much with each run”.
This is the first time this team competition is part of the Olympics, and Team USA fans at home were hoping the US would at least be competitive.
This World Cup season, Goggia and Vonn have waged a 1-2 battle in the downhill. “It might not be a medal, but I definitely gave it everything I had”.
Vonn won an Olympic bronze medal in super-G at the 2010 Vancouver Games, where she took gold in downhill.
She is the first Norwegian woman to win multiple medals in Alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics.
In the buildup to the games, the skier stirred up controversy when she said that she hoped to represent the United States well in Pyeongchang before adding: “I don’t think that there are a lot of people now in our government that do that”.
She has 45 podiums in super-G in the World Cup, including 28 wins.
Ms. Vonn also said she planned to reject the traditional invitation for Team USA to visit the White House.
Vonn is slated to compete in the ladies downhill and alpine combined this week, having been among the favorites stunned by Ester Ledecka in Saturday’s super-G final.
Vonn missed the 2014 Olympics because of a right knee injury suffered at the 2013 world championships and a subsequent re-injury of the knee nine months later while training at Copper Mountain.
“We’ll see what happens, but I would say 99% sure this is my last Olympics”.
“It’s been really hard for me not to get emotional for so many reasons, especially because of my grandfather”, she said.
Ledecka will become the only athlete to ever compete in both skiing and snowboarding at an Olympics when she enters the snowboard parallel giant slalom on Thursday, February 22. “If everything lands perfectly I could potentially get a medal”. “I didn’t do that, but I won a bronze and I think he would still be proud of me”. The combined event, Vonn’s last in PyeongChang, was originally slated for Friday in Korea, but has been rescheduled for Thursday due to weather.
Lindsey Vonn, the target of hateful comments on social media, said she has no plans to change her social media strategy and disengage.
33-year-old Vonn still managed to break the record for oldest female medalist in Alpine skiing at the Winter Games, previously set by Michaela Dorfmeister at 32 years and 332 days when she won the women’s super-G in 2006.
She clocked a time of one minute 39.22 seconds to clinch gold ahead of Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel who was just 0.09 secs behind while Vonn finished with a time of 1:39.69.
