Lindsey Vonn wins again at Lake Louise

December 07 14:35 2015

Vonn has now won 70 World Cup titles during her career, 14 at Lake Louise alone.

Vonn’s strengths are the speed events of downhill and super-G, but she is also proficient in giant slalom. The overall crown goes to the skier who earns the most points over all disciplines – downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom. “It’ll be fun to watch her race”.

The American also swept all three Lake Louise races in 2011 and 2012, and has 18 career wins at the venue in 41 starts. “I should probably not do that tomorrow”. This year it’s just as incredible – I kind of feel old.

Despite overnight snow, course workers managed to maintain a fast track Saturday. Among her admirers was nine-year-old Calgarian Sierra Coe, who asked Vonn how many more media interviews her heroine had to do.

“I knew from experience I could make it up if I skied well”, Vonn said. “You’ve skied it before, you believe in what you’re doing and you don’t get afraid”. “Try to learn as much as I can from the other USA girls, from Lindsey”. I don’t second guess what’s going on.

She skied to her second win in as many days down the Men’s Olympic slope, leading some to question if she’s kicking off another streak to rival her one from 2010-2012 when she claimed seven consecutive races at the Alberta resort.

Vonn won the season-opening World Cup downhill Friday for her 16th victory at Lake Louise.

Sunny skies, foreboding clouds, low visibility – no matter the conditions, Vonn simply proved in a different league than the rest of the field. She finished in 1 minute, 50.5 seconds, edging Cornelia Huetter of Austria by 0.58 seconds.

(CNN)Lindsey Vonn’s record-breaking love affair with Lake Louise continues. It’s always a challenge. It was her 116th career podium finish. Svindal finished his run 1.17 seconds from Hirscher.

Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., was the top Canadian, finishing seventh.

“Today was not easy, I was a little bit exhausted in my mind”, Huetter said. “It was a goal of mind to be on the podium”. “In the back of my head I was thinking, ‘I’ll get points, but maybe a top 15.’ So, by holding in 15th, that’s a really good day”.

She could not keep Vonn at bay, though, the American showing herself as a class apart as she surged to another impressive victory. She’s closer to the overall World Cup wins’ record of 86 held by retired Swede Ingemar Stenmark. “It was pretty sketchy here and there. Lake Louise has proven again it’s my favorite place on the tour and I’m leaving here with a lot of confidence”. I think she’s going to go for it, but I think since it’s her first speed event on the World Cup circuit, she’s going to feel it out, see how it goes.
