Lorenzo Cain, Brewers reportedly agree to 5-year, $80 million deal

Alas, those hopes were officially dashed when Cain agreed to a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night.

To obtain Yelich, Stearns had to part with four high-level prospects, including outfielder and No. 1 overall prospect Lewis Brinson.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com tweeted the deal is worth $80 million over five years.

Yelich still has 4 years left on a multiyear contract.

Yelich, 26, hit.282/.369/.439 (117 OPS+) with 36 doubles, 18 homers, 81 RBI, 100 runs and 16 stolen bases last season.

Cain hit.289 with 56 home runs and 308 RBIs in 713 games with the Royals and thanked the Royals fans for their support over the years.

The Brewers were busy Thursday. “The job goes with you wherever you are”. Much of his value is derived from him playing center and playing it well, and with Cain’s 32nd birthday in April, it’s a risk to think he will last more than half the contract at a new position.

The Milwaukee Brewers continued to load up for the 2018 campaign, landing Christian Yelich in a trade with the Miami Marlins.

Yelich said the emotions of the Marlins’ fire sale have been insane and exhausting. Following the other deals the Marlins made this past offseason, he said he had preferred to play with another team rather than part of the team’s rebuilding effort.

They’ve also reportedly made a multi-year offer for Yu Darvish, considered the top free agent starting pitcher available. However, he is signed for four more years at just $43.25 million, with another $15 million option for 2022. He was an all-star in 2015 and has a career.290 average over his 8-year career with the Royals. Given what we’ve seen so far, that may very well be the kind of player he is.

“It didn’t play into it at all”, Hill said.

Following a down season in 2016, Cain bounced back well last season. Season-ticket holders have complained about the direction of the franchise under Jeter, but he has said payroll and a stronger farm system are the only path to sustained success. Yelich had previously voiced his displeasure with the situation via his agent, who asked for a trade this winter.
