Mario Kart is officially coming to smartphones

February 01 12:27 2018

After having been pushed back due to not being ready for rollout, Nintendo has finally announced that we can expect Nintendo Switch Online to land in September 2018.

First released on the SNES in 1992, the series has since become one of Nintendo’s most popular.

The last announcement regarding new Mario projects is that Nintendo is wanting to make an animated Mario movie. None of this means that Mario won’t flop at the box office-anyone remember the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie from the early 1990s?-though partnering with Illumination looks like a smart move.

Nintendo has released a couple of mobile games like “Super Mario Run” and “Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp“, according to The Verge.

Unfortunately, just like today’s Nintendo Switch Online release window, the Mario Kart Tour reveal was very brief, offering only a logo and no details.

Either way it does sound rather exciting given that Mario Kart is one of Nintendo’s larger franchises. Making their games control well on mobile is a high priority for Nintendo, so the firm might not be keen on a traditional touchscreen-controlled racing game.

The service, which will cost $20 (£14) a year, will allow users to play games against other players online, as well as download classic titles with added online play. Although there’s no indication of how similar it’ll be to the regular games. That’s up from its initial projection to sell 10 million Switch machines, which was raised a year ago to 14 million.

But Nintendo is looking to extend Mario’s reach beyond games.

Elsewhere, the Kyoto gaming company has seen enormous success with the successor to the Wii U, Nintendo Switch. When compared to the other two console online services this is drastically cheaper and I think this is key to Nintendo receiving any subscribers at all. The Switch is Nintendo’s latest console in the market. Executives joked that they initially thought cardboard would be cheap but it turned out to be more expensive than they thought.
