‘Martian,’ ‘Revenant’ get awards boost with top Globes wins

The Nielsen company says an estimated 18.5 million viewers watched the Golden Globes Awards ceremony on NBC on Sunday night.

Ricky Gervais returned to host the awards show for the fourth time. The dubious placement of “The Martian” in the comedy category was a running joke throughout the evening – even Scott questioned it as he walked on stage to accept the best picture award.

Actor, Drama: Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Revenant“.

The five films are the only Globe best picture nominees in either category to also appear on the Producers Guild of America’s list of 10 best picture nominees announced this past week.

“I’ve made a lot of movies that people just didn’t go to see, so to make a movie that people just enjoyed this much … it really came down to (director) Ridley Scott”, Damon said. The popular amusing man sipped beer and took shots took shots at everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Matt Damon and at one of his favorite targets, the Golden Globes themselves.

Snubbed at the Globes was Open Road’s one-time Oscar frontrunner “Spotlight“, which will look for more love from the Academy this week, along with the Weinstein Co.’s “Carol“, Fox Searchlight’s Saoirse Ronan-who has become close friends with rival Brie Larson on the awards circuit-for emigre drama “Brooklyn“, “The Danish Girl“, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, and Best Comedy nominees “The Big Short” and “Trainwreck”, whose writer-star Amy Schumer did an amusing bit with gal pal Jennifer Lawrence (they’re developing a film together). Neither was “Steve Jobs“, but Kate Winslet won the first award for Best Supporting Actress, thanking co-star Michael Fassbender, who flew in from the United Kingdom set of “Assassin’s Creed” for the second weekend in a row, looking genuinely moved.

In the best foreign movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama “Son of Saul” was the victor. Also shocked by a win was Aaron Sorkin, who took Best Screenplay for “Steve Jobs“. Taraji P. Henson arrives at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

That didn’t stop Winslet from an exuberant acceptance speech, nor did it mute early winners Rachel Bloom (best actress in a TV series comedy for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) and Maura Tierney (best actress in a series, limited series or TV movie for “The Affair“). Actors in both shows – Christian Slater for “Mr. Robot” and Gabriel Garcia Bernal for “Mozart in the Jungle” – also won.

“Mr Robot”, about a computer programmer and vigilante hacker, took home the prize for best drama series.

Oscar Isaac, a star of the box-office behemoth “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, won best actor in a miniseries for HBO’s “Show Me a Hero“. Lady Gaga, who has seven Grammys, won her first major acting honor for her performance on the anthology series “American Horror Story”. The award is bestowed by 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

DiCaprio, 41, who has yet to win an Oscar, received a standing ovation and said he shared his award with indigenous people around the world.
