Masters 2018: Jordan Spieth Holds 2-Stroke Lead After Round 1

April 06 11:58 2018

Woods has feasted on Augusta National’s longest holes over the years, but parred each of them in his return to golf’s first major. That honor went to amateur Doug Ghim, a Texas senior who made a pair on the back nine but not in the Masters’ conventional way.

Finau bogeyed the first hole and the 14th but made six birdies to tie Matt Kuchar for second place.

Garcia was two over par before the setback and he gathered himself to birdie the next hole before carding nine-over-par 81. He closed with a bogey for a 69.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, seeking a fifth major, is among a group of players on three-under-par, alongside Henrik Stenson of Sweden and American Patrick Reed. Even a bogey on the final hole felt like a par the way he navigated out of the trees and limited the damage with a pitch that stopped inches from going in.

Tiger shot a 73, one over par in the first round. But he drained a sweeping, super-fast, downhill putt for another birdie.

“I feel like I’m kind of one round down out of six, so I’m not getting ahead of myself”.

Most aggravating was playing the par 5s without a birdie.

Woods wasn’t almost as dialed in.

Still, it left him 3 over in the opening round at the Masters and seven shots behind leader and playing partner Marc Leishman. To be fair to Garcia that was a bad break, there was very little wrong with that approach but Augusta can be a cruel mistress.

Still, Woods had some moments on the front side.

He also knows it could have been worse, especially after dumping a 9-iron into Rae’s Creek on the par-3 12th hole and having to make a 15-foot putt for bogey and avoid falling to 4-over par. It was Woods’ first competitive birdie at the famed course since April 12, 2015, when he carded a 4 at No. 15 in the final round of the Masters. He last finished T17 at the 2015 event. It was looking like it might be another hole-in-one as it was working its way down the hill.

Vegas has missed the cut in both of his previous trips here, and Frittelli knows he’ll have to put up a strong score Friday to play on the weekend. He chipped out and missed a 20-footer for par.

Sandy Lyle, the sole Scot in the field in the 30th anniversary of his win here, holed a 40-foot eagle putt at the 15th before finishing bogey-bogey.

The possibility that they could find themselves head-to-head against an in-form Woods come Sunday is “an extra motivation for everybody” says world number three Jon Rahm, a 22-year-old from Spain. “It’s just a really good start”.

The four-time victor of the tournament then missed the cut in the last three majors that year and was unable to play in any of them in 2016 and 2017. That included the par-5 15th, and no one suffered quite like defending champion Sergio Garcia. The tweet was in relation ti Sergio and wide Angela naming their firstborn Azalea after the name given to the 13th hole at Augusta National. Woods was found to have a mix of prescription pills to help with pain and sleep.

Woods, who missed the last two Masters because of back issues, was followed by hordes of supporters all day but he was unable to deliver the type of roar-inspiring shots he once did easily at Augusta National. After a rocky start to his opening nine holes, Spieth entered the 13th hole 2-under par thanks to an eagle on the par-5 eighth.
