In his acceptance speech Sunday, Damon noted that 18 years have passed since he was at the Beverly Hilton accepting his first Globe for best motion picture screenplay with friend Ben Affleck, with whom he wrote “Good Will Hunting”.

Steve Jobs“, a controversial look at the late Apple co-founder that floundered at the box office despite warm reviews, took home Golden Globes for supporting actress Kate Winslet, and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.

Matt Damon won best actor in a comedy for his performance in Ridley Scott’s nerdy sci-fi hit “The Martian“.

Actor Gael Garcia Bernal speaks as he presents the award for best film at the Fenix Iberoamerican Film Awards, at the Esperanza Iris Theater in Mexico City, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015.

And of course, Ricky couldn’t resist taking a dig at the Golden Globe Awards itself.

The Revenant“, starring the best-actor favourite Leonardo DiCaprio, came in buoyed by its $37 million wide-release, good enough to nearly topple J.J. Abrams’ box-office juggernaut, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Or maybe not because, in the yearly tradition of who’s in and who’s out, awards like the Golden Globes 2016 is just as a fashion show as it is… er, an awards night? The crowd greeted him with a standing ovation.

“Not even Sean Penn will find me!” he joked in a reference to the Oscar-winning actor’s recent interview with Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo.

“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had”, said Stallone, whose only other Golden Globes nod was also for portraying the Italian Stallion in “Rocky”.

There was some debate as to whether some films would be categorized in the drama or comedy categories, such as Joy and The Martian, though the Hollywood Foreign Press Association ruled them both as comedies.

Christian Slater won best supporting actor in a TV series for his role as an anarchist in “Mr. Robot”, USA Network’s hacker drama.

But he’s going to have to do better (or worse) to make this hosting gig memorable. “There are so many people here I recognise, it’s great”.

Despite some outliers in the nominee ranks, the film acting awards went to a more expected lot.

He finished by telling winners that their awards were “worthless”. “If you do win tonight, remember that no one cares about that award as much as you do. OK?”
