Matt Ryan, now a nine-year veteran in the National Football League is coming off a season that saw him perform at an MVP level and put him right in the thick of things in terms of that discussion.
Ryan easily outdistanced the two-time league MVP Brady in votes, a night before the two star players face off in the Super Bowl Championship game on Sunday. Matt Ryan has had an MVP season, but the Falcons’ success goes well beyond their resurgent quarterback.
This is, of course, not even the most important award Ryan is hoping to earn tonight: He’s also the favorite to win Most Valuable Player. While neither of the Dallas rookies captured that particular award, Prescott was perhaps a surprise victor in the Offensive Rookie of the Year category over his running back teammate. Whatever the reason people were overlooking Ryan this year as he put up ridiculous numbers week after week will hopefully vanish when Ryan takes home the trophy on Saturday night. But no team to score that many points has won the Super Bowl.
The Dallas Cowboys’ Jason Garrett won the coach of the year ahead of Patriots chief Bill Belichick and Miami Dolphins boss Adam Gase.
The Cowboys rookie was one of almost 100 players who were on hand for Saturday night’s event. Yes, Aaron Rodgers was still great, but they weren’t the unit that they had been before.
Ryan’s offensive coordinator at Boston College was a man named Steve Logan. “The last six years I’ve been here with him have been phenomenal”.
He had a quarterback completion percentage of 69.9 and racked up 4,944 yards passing.
That didn’t happen, as Ryan sweat both awards. Prescott received one vote for MVP.
Starting with Comeback Player of the Year, here are the predictions for the major awards at NFL Honors on Saturday from Houston.
Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Giants quarterback Eli Manning shared the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
“Yeah. Absolutely. I do”, Ryan said about whether he believes he’d be in the Super Bowl right now if he got the Falcons job.
And be sure to tune in to FOX for Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots (6:30 p.m. ET).
Each award at the NFL Honors event was voted on by a panel of 50 Associated Press writers. Comedian and actor Keegan-Michael Key of “Key & Peele” fame will serve as host.
