Microsoft Developing SIM Cards For Windows 10 Hardware

January 09 20:03 2016

Microsoft is planning to make LTE access a little easier soon, thanks to its own SIM card, the Verge reports.

While Microsoft has not made an announcement, it appears that the company is working on a SIM card that will allow users of certain Windows 10 devices to purchase data services from multiple carriers. The Store listing says that it’s “designed to work exclusively with specific Windows 10 devices”, so until we know what those are there’s an additional reason to skip the install for now. There is still no information available about the service’s launch date or the cost of the mobile-data plans.

The Redmond giant, as previously foretold by the news sources is now in the process of building a new App, which will help all mobiles within the Microsoft banner to connect to a network provider. It is still hard for us to connect the dots when it comes to this new app and it is a matter of time before Microsoft details out the plans for the same. Microsoft’s SIM cards will also be based on Transatel’s SIM 901 card.

While Microsoft has not officially announced it yet, the app is available for download.

Microsoft is also taking control of Windows updates for phones, which is new for the platform.

The most plausible theory is that Microsoft will sell plans directly through its Windows Store, and the app’s description already notes that the cellular data will be tied to one’s Microsoft Account.

According to a FAQ included in the app itself, service will initially be available in the US, UK, and France. Microsoft’s Cellular Data app will ask users to “select a plan”, suggesting that users will buy discrete chunks of data the Microsoft Store.

If the cellular data really works then it will be a great advantage for Windows users.
