The 71st Annual Tony Awards will be handed out in a June 11 ceremony hosted by Kevin Spacey at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Others who hope to land a coveted spot include A Bronx Tale, Come From Away, “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Bandstand, War Paint and “Groundhog Day“.
There were nine nominations for “Dear Evan Hansen” about a high school student with anxiety, and eight for “A Doll’s House, Part Two” – an imagined sequel to Henrik Ibsen’s classic play “A Doll’s House” written by playwright Lucas Hnath.
Joining Groban and Pierce for best musical actor are Christian Borle in “Falsettos“, Andy Karl for “Groundhog Day” and Ben Platt in “Dear Evan Hansen“.
Karl’s magnetic performance has come to seem nearly heroic, given that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament three days before the show opened and is performing in a knee brace. Anastasia walked away with two minor nominations, and Amelie and Charlie were completely snubbed. “Plus, Best Revivals also include “Falsettos” and ‘Miss Saigon“. Oscar winners Cate Blanchett, Chris Cooper, Kevin Kline and Sally Field also securing noms, as did Emmy winners Laurie Metcalf and Danny DeVito, and Straight Outta Compton’s Corey Hawkins.
Unlike last year, when “Hamilton” earned 16 Tony nominations (and eventually won 11), this year’s contest is considered to be relatively wide open.
Oh – and on a personal note, Sweat and Indecent, the plays I wrote about earlier this spring, were both nominated for Best Play, along with Oslo and A Doll’s House Part 2, which makes me four for four on Best Play nominees for the first time ever, to say the least.
The long-term fate of many shows now on Broadway often rests on how many nominations and later wins they can accumulate. Although The Great Comet earned 12 nominations to Hansen’s 9, that doesn’t necessarily give it the edge; it is not hard to imagine a scenario in which voters give the big awards to runaway hit Hansen, while the less conventional Comet pulls a Peter and the Starcatcher-style sweep of the design categories.
The musical adaptation of the classic 1993 film has won best new musical at the UK’s Olivier Awards.
Over the years he has starred in many productions both in NY and in London’s West End, including Shakespeare’s Othello and King Lear, as well as Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Of Mice And Men. “#HelloDolly received a total of 10 #Tony nominations this morning!” A number of productions-Paramour, In Transit, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Cherry Orchard, Significant Other, and Oh, Hello-ended their runs prior to the nominations announcement.
