Minecraft is now available for cross-play on any device

Nintendo’s recently launched Switch has been a victor, with fans snapping up the console and a “Legend of Zelda” game that has become a must-play title for fans. But that’s not all.

To clarify, this is not the same as Minecraft Realms, which is a private, cloud-hosted environment. And fret not, any and all games or worlds that you may have created will transfer right along.

Merriam tells WIRED that this will transform Minecraft from “a game into a creative platform” with “more opportunities for entrepreneurship”. Now that versions of the game on consoles like Xbox One and Nintendo Switch are set to move to Bedrock, the Better Together update could make it significantly easier for more users to play more often. Get the news you can use. There’s some talk in the interview that gets me thinking that the real reason has something to do with the shareholders causing complications, but as it stands we need to take Sony at their word. Now, is this Sony not playing ball?

In the case of “Minecraft, “though, Microsoft managed to bridge the game across different types of devices from different, competing companies”. There’s a “Minecraft: Java Edition”, which is the original PC game (still supported).

This basically means two things. The Java Edition and PlayStation Edition will remain separate for now. That means Xbox One players can play with Switch gamers, with Android or iPad players joining in. From mobile platforms to your dedicated gaming console, you’ll be able to share your adventures with your friends without being burdened with borders. Rocket League is another major game that has cross-platform multiplayer.

The console versions of Minecraft will benefit from limitless terrain generation. “They’ll be able to continue expanding”.

Minecraft will also benefit from the power of the next Xbox, “Project Scorpio”, gaining new graphical features that really bring the game’s world alive.

The developers have done a special version of the game that runs in 4K resolution.

“We’ve wanted to integrate cross-platform for ages, essentially making a version of Minecraft that’s consistent no matter what device you’re choosing to play on”, Tom Stone, creative communications assistant at Minecraft developer Mojang AB, wrote in a blog post.

And that’s it! We hope you’re excited as we are about this year’s plans for Minecraft.

We’ve reached out to Sony for comment, and will update this story once we hear back.
