Mizzou professor charged with assault of student reporter during protest

January 25 20:02 2016

Click has been charged with third-degree assault, which is a misdemeanor, because of her clash with reporters covering the “Concerned Student 1950” protest in the fall, according to city prosecutor’s office in Columbia, Missouri.

“I Think that the University of Missouri needs to remember their core function is to educate our students safely and whenever someone doesn’t educate students safely, they don’t need to be on the University of Missouri’s campus”, said Jones.

Click confronted a student photographer and a student videographer during the protests, calling for “muscle” to help remove the videographer, Mark Schierbecker, from the protest area.

Interim Chancellor Hank Foley said Monday that Click will keep her position until a task force decides whether she deserves to keep her tenure.

Her actions, which have yet to get her fired from Mizzou, drew much criticism from her colleagues and has spurred Republican legislators to call for her termination.

Click, 45, was charged with misdemeanor assault earlier Monday.

Under fire, Click resigned her courtesy appointment with the journalism school the day after the incident but remains an assistant professor in the university’sDepartment of Communication.

The charge is punishable by a fine of up to $300 and up to 15 days in jail, according to the city’s website.

“Everyone is entitled to a fair process”, Trachtenberg said of Click’s future with the university.

We believe that her actions on November 9 constitute at most a regrettable mistake, one that came, moreover, at the end of several weeks during which Click served alongside other faculty and staff as an ally to students who were protesting what they saw as their exclusion from and isolation at the University.

In response, more than 100 faculty members at the school signed a open letter in support of the embattled professor. “You need to get out”.

Click did not respond to an email Monday seeking comment.
