Bangladesh, which is facing an unprecedented influx of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar, plans to build new settlements to house about 4,00,000 refugees that entered the country over the past three weeks.

The crisis has drawn sharp criticism from around the world.

Wild elephants trampled two elderly Rohingya refugees to death Monday as they slept underneath a plastic sheet near a forest in Bangladesh, police said.

Evidence collected by human rights groups, including satellite photos, shows scores of villages burned to the ground.

In Myanmar the latest persecution traces its roots back to the origins of the country, once called Burma, and is closely tied to the country’s Buddhist history.

However, the United Nations food agency has resumed deliveries in the central part of Rakhine this week for 50,000 displaced people. “I feel really devastated and guilty because now even though I’m in a country where I have free will I’ve not been able to. give them the help that I’m getting”, said an 18-year-old student who left behind his grandparents.

Thousands are now facing hunger and illness in crowded, makeshift camps.

“Wall-to-wall human suffering, that’s what it is”.

Many refugees are sleeping in the open air and in desperate need of food and water.

One India-based refugee, Mohammad Salimullah, told AFP of the severity of the situation.

“We have already got all the supplies necessary from the government and non-government agencies, and mobilized additional health personnel from neighbouring upazilas to conduct the vaccination campaign”, said Salam.

I have quite sharp images of what those people are going through now. The Rohingyas who are mainly Muslims speak a dialect of the Bengali language.

Thousands came out in the streets of Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Dakar and Accra in solidarity with the over 400,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh to escape a seeming ethnic cleansing.

Turkey is ready to work with the governments of Myanmar and Bangladesh to seek a solution to the problem, Erdogan added.

Saturday’s rally in Regina was one of many across in Canada held in solidarity for the Rohingya people.

The Myanmar government “and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in particular, should condemn unequivocally all incitement to racial or religious hatred and combat social discrimination and hostilities against the Rohingya minority”, said the resolution.
