NBC to air some live commercials during ‘Hairspray’

“Hairspray” was born as a movie, directed by John Waters and introducing Ricki Lake as Tracy. While the brother to “Grease: Live” star Julianne Hough said he won’t be going back to the show that launched their careers this year, the male multi-hyphenate promised us he’d never close the curtain on what he calls his “home” for good.

Hairspray Live!, NBC’s fourth live musical since 2013, will premiere Wednesday at 8 p.m. The1988 John Waters movie of the same name became a Broadway musical in 2002, which in turn inspired a movie remake in 2007, which now finds itself reinvented for television. The cast and producers of Hairspray Live! spoke with the Television Critics Association about this week’s big production. She is such a fan of “Hairspray” that once she had a birthday party where everyone sang songs from the musical. Check local listings for more info.

In the musical, Tracy Turnblad (played by Maddie Baillio) and Link Larkin (played by Garrett Clayton) have quite a strong romance – and Maddie spilled all about her kissing scenes with Garrett.

A student at Marymount Manhattan College, Baillio had seen an ad on Facebook about open-call auditions in NY for the role of Tracy but gave it little thought at the time.
