New footage suggests Michael Brown made drug deal before shooting death

March 13 13:40 2017

The security video shows Brown putting a small bag of suspected marijuana on the counter in front of three store clerks.

But Pollock, the documentary maker, argues the first video shows Brown gave the cigarillos back to the store clerks who then put them behind the counter.

The film made its debut Saturday night at the SXSW film festival in Austin. Then, and this is key, after he ran away and the officer got out of his vehicle and ordered him to stop, Brown stopped, turned and charged at the officer.

Brown was shot to death by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer in 2014, and the event triggered massive protests and riots amid claims of racism.

Pollock believes it was for safekeeping. Pollack believes that Brown returned to pick up the cigarillos at the counter.

The film describes Brown leaving the store but returning – presumably to retrieve the cigarillos and other items – about 10 hours later, approximately 10 minutes before he was shot.

Pollock and Brown’s mum claim that the video indicates their was a previous understanding between the staff and the teenager rather than him performing a “strong arm robbery” as police claimed. Eleven hours later, Brown got into a fatal confrontation with Wilson, which would ignite the Ferguson uprisings.

The St. Louis County Police said, “If it did occur, the incident is still irrelevant to our investigation because our department investigated the encounter between Michael Brown and Darren Wilson”.

“I was surprised to hear that two years later there was a video”.

“What this video shows is that they lied to the world about what happened”, Pollock said.

The Washington Post, meanwhile, may be the worst offender when it comes to characterizing the new footage, stating that the new video disproves the police department narrative of Brown committing store robbery, as it was just “the aftermath of a prearranged exchange gone wrong between Brown and a group of store clerks”. “And shows suppression of evidence”, Pollock continued.

Former Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said in an interview that he hadn’t seen the 1 a.m. surveillance video. Brown walks towards the exit holding his shopping bag, and then appears to change his mind, and hands the bag back to the clerk.

The documentary filmmaker behind “Stranger Fruit” claims Brown was not an armed robber but had traded pot for the cigarillos he was accused of stealing.

According to the Times, Pollock spent two years conducting research for the documentary and remains skeptical about the reasons behind not charging Darren Wilson.

Wilson was not indicted for fatally shooting Brown, and resigned from Ferguson Police Department.

A civil trial for Brown’s case is set to begin in 2018.

There was no transaction“, Kanzler told the New York Times. For starters, it seems no one involved in this alleged drug deal has admitted that’s what happened so we can’t say for sure that’s what is happening here. (A lawyer for the store and its employees has told the Times that no such transaction took place).
