New Hampshire voters say no to establishment candidates

This week, Democrat Bernie Sanders easily trounced Hillary Clinton and bombastic Republican Donald Trump raced ahead of his fellow presidential nominee challengers. Donald Trump the billionaire businessman won the primary as expected, but the tight battle for the runner-up amongst the GOP went to John Kasich the Governor of Ohio.

A senior aide confirmed to Reuters yesterday that Christie would pull out, a day after the combative Republican’s sixth-place finish in the New Hampshire primary raised doubts about his viability as a candidate.

As he shifts his attention to South Carolina’s February 20 contest, the 44-year-old freshman senator wants voters to know he’s learned an important lesson from his experience in New Hampshire.

Lewandowski did not rule out putting up a negative spot again, however, saying that nine days between now and the SC primary is “a lifetime” in politics.

The flamboyant Trump has routinely belittled his opponents, especially former Florida governor Jeb Bush, the son and brother of two USA presidents who finished fourth in the New Hampshire voting behind a conservative firebrand, Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

With a large field still in the race, Trump said his rivals are “all really potential threats; but, I’m OK at handling threats”.

SC and Nevada are not at all like that, and the Super Tuesday states even more so.

Christie was once lauded as a savior of the Republican Party after he won reelection in blue New Jersey in 2013 with a broad coalition that included majorities of women and Hispanics. In her concession speech, Clinton echoed Sanders’ calls for taking on Wall Street banks and tackling income inequality.

But by Wednesday, it was becoming clear to the campaign that it had run out of steam.

The odds of Trump winning the White House, once seen as an extremely long shot, improved significantly after his victory in New Hampshire, online betting site Ladbrokes PLC said. “We’re going to win in South Carolina“, Trump declared, looking down the campaign trail to the next stop.

Poor showings in Iowa and New Hampshire led some frequent debate participants, including Christie and Kentucky Sen. “Cynically, part of me says he waits on conversations with the other governors in the race, trying to figure out what he can get out of this”.
