KAIKURA A pair of cows in New Zealand were left stranded following the 7.5-richter natural disaster that struck the island nation after another group of three cows were rescued from the same fate.
Tourists from New Zealand and overseas have been trapped in the coastal township since Monday’s quake, with State Highway 1 blocked to the north and south.
Farmer Derrick Millton told the Newshub news service how he and other volunteers had rescued the cows.

A number of cows have been spotted stranded by landslides on the coast north of Kaikoura, following Monday’s 7.4 magnitude natural disaster.
Helicopters began airlifting people from Kaikoura on Tuesday, after landslides cut off road and rail links.
The U.S. Navy had offered two MH60 helicopters aboard its destroyer USS Sampson, which was now in New Zealand waters for celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the New Zealand navy.
The timing of the quake – shortly after midnight on Sunday – combined with the epicenter being in a sparsely populated region prevented a higher toll, authorities said.
“The New Zealand Defence Force will be conducting further assessments of the road today”, she says.
The short answer is yes, although officials are yet to declare a national emergency after the recent New Zealand quake since the regions seem to be coping well so far.
“Some very short-term practical issues that need to be resolved, making sure that we’re getting more water, food and ultimately people are here to support the almost 600 people at the welfare centre because the road access points here are blocked off”.

They’ve also been bringing in supplies of water, food and fuel.
According to the AP, New Zealand’s 10 million cattle easily outnumber its 4.7 million people.
New Zealand sits on the Ring of Fire, an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common. A 6.3 quake there in February 2011 killed 185 people and caused widespread damage.
