Australian tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios has won his first ATP title in France, beating 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic 6-2 7-6 (7-3) in the Marseilles Open final.
He will bid to reach his second ATP World Tour final against either Czech Tomas Berdych or Belgian David Goffin on Saturday, having reached his maiden final previous year in Estoril where he finished runner-up to Gasquet.
Ram, ranked 89th, broke Dimitrov to open the match and held from there to capture the first set, taking the final game at love.
“I only know a couple of words so yeah Marin’s (Cilic) got that down pat so maybe he might have to teach me some french soon”.
But with his aggressive style and massive serving, experts predict Kyrgios has a bright future and beaten opponent Cilic was clearly impressed.
Paire, seeded eighth, represents the last home hope in Marseille after Australian Kyrgios earlier whipped Richard Gasquet 6-0, 6-4. That was the main thing that was good.
Singapore Slammers teammates Nick Kyrgios and Stan Wawrinka put their differences aside and seem to have made up at the International Premier Tennis League tournament.
The 20-year-old Australian sent down 15 aces, won 93 per cent of his first-serve points and did not face a break point in the 70-minute, 6-4 6-2 semi-final victory.
“I hadn’t dropped a set going into the final so I just felt a lot more confident this time”, Kyrgios added. I had a chance at the end of the second set to get the break, but he managed to play well. I think he was returning well, making a lot of returns in the first set.
“I came here not expecting to win it, to be honest”. The young Aussie saved the only break point he faced in the match.
“The atmosphere in here is really, really good”.
