When the keys are played musical notes can be heard from the console. Nintendo Labo is a new line of interactive build-and-play experiences that combine DIY creations with the magic of Nintendo Switch. This game makes use of all the fancy gyroscopic tools that exist within the Switch’s JoyCons, which is good, as otherwise there’s really no point for the functionality to even exist. A special customization set, sold separately, will give kids a chance to decorate their creations via coloured tape, stencils, and stickers.
Officially, only two Nintendo Labo Toy-Con kits have been announced. But because this is Nintendo, there is a bit more to the product than there appears to be at first.
Notably, instructions for how to build the fishing rod are displayed on a nearby Nintendo Switch console. Or is this another reason showing why Nintendo is the greatest gaming company on Earth? For something built for kids, the inner workings of the cardboard toys seem pretty complex, so adults will definitely have to be hands-on with Labo building.
Some Nintendo Labo peripherals featured in the trailer include: a bird, a steering wheel and pedals, a camera, a gun, a pedal for a drumkit, a joystick and a few other pieces that look interesting but don’t have clear gameplay purposes.
Called the Nintendo Labo, the cardboard accessories are meant to contribute to what Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima called the “new ways of playing”.
Nintendo Labo launches on April 20 with two kits: the Variety Kit and the Robot Kit.
As I sat there, under the glow of my monitor with the playful Nintendo Labo tune playing, my 10-year old son walked by to tell me YouTube had suggested Jake and Logan Paul for him and he wanted to know how to remove that suggestion. The slightly more expensive kit comes with the massive robot suit seen in the video (top). The Nintendo Labo takes this concept and puts a spin on it by taking DIY cardboard projects and incorporating the Nintendo Switch, a console/handheld hybrid that was released on March 3, 2017. The Toy-Con Motorbike features an ignition button to start the engine and a throttle can be activated by twisting the right handle. Leaning your body or turning the handlebars left and right controls the motorbike.
This is not the first time Nintendo has produced simple toys. You can even insert different assembled knobs to create new sound effects and tones!
That being said, once you see how much each Nintendo Labo kit costs, you may think twice about ever throwing a creation away.
