No-one matched the numbers – 32, 16, 19, 57, 34 and Powerball number 13 – for the prize of nearly $950m (A$1.36b) which was up for grabs on Saturday.
The Valero Corner Store at 4600 William Cannon Dr. sold a ticket that matched five of the six numbers needed to win the $900 million grand prize jackpot.
The jackpot is still growing after no one claimed to have a winning ticket following Saturday night’s Powerball drawing.
The jackpot has ballooned since its November 4 starting point of $40 million.
It is the largest lottery prize ever offered in North America and is the first time that a US lottery prize has topped the $1 billion mark.
Powerball is played in 44 of 50 states and three American territories.
While no one won the jackpot in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, one ticket purchased in Sioux City came awfully close.
Several in-store New Jersey Lottery jackpot displays early Sunday morning were black for the Powerball jackpot, indicating that the signs may not be able to handle such a high jackpot. Since then ticket sales have only taken off.
Host Sam Arlen speaks as the winning Powerball numbers are about to be drawn at the Florida Lottery studio in Tallahassee, Florida January 9, 2016. The official Powerball website lists all of the television stations that will be airing the drawing, but for those who do not have cable television and still want to find out if they are winners, the Powerball website will live stream the results here. The next jackpot is expected to soar to $1.3 billion by Wednesday’s drawing. Spain’s massively popular Christmas lottery, known as “El Gordo“, is ranked as the world’s richest and last month showered 2.2 billion euros ($2.4 billion) across the country in millions of prizes. More ticket sales also make it more likely there will be a victor, as all the extra tickets mean more number combinations are covered. Seventy-five percent of all the possible combinations were purchased before Saturday’s drawing, Grief said, and he expects that enough tickets will be sold to cover about 80 percent by Wednesday. The change decreased the odds of winning the jackpot, but improved players’ chances of winning another prize.
