Donald Trump said at a campaign rally Monday that it’s “sad” that the suspect in the weekend bombings in NY and New Jersey will receive medical attention and legal representation.
Linden police chief James Sarnicki said the officer who found Rahami had demanded the suspect put up his hands when he woke up. Harinder Bains, owner of Merdie’s Tavern, recognized Rahami after watching CNN on his laptop and called police. He was taken to a hospital for surgery.
The remaining four devices in the backpack will be transferred in protective cases to a local site and then will be taken to the Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory at Quantico, Virginia, Bollwage said. A judge set bail at $5.2 million. Numerous explosive devices were uncovered in the city throughout the weekend.
The Department of Homeland Security is actively monitoring and participating in the investigations in NY and New Jersey.
Three of the bombs had one component in common: a flip-style cellphone, a federal official said, adding that the pipe bomb that exploded in Seaside Park was constructed with a threaded pipe and black powder.
One bloodstained page contained references to both Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born cleric who was killed in a 2011 drone strike and whose preaching has inspired other acts of violence, and Nidal Hasan, the former Army officer who went on a deadly shooting rampage in 2009 at Fort Hood, Texas.
Investigators had a strong indicator of who the prime suspect was just a day after the bombings because surveillance video captured images of the same man at the 23rd Street location in Chelsea and the area on West 27th Street where State Police found the unexploded device.
For O’Neill, who was formally sworn in as the 43rd police commissioner Monday by Mayor Bill de Blasio, the bombing case was his baptism by fire and also reaffirmed the importance of social media.
Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, was shown stretchered into an ambulance, sporting a bloodied bandage on his right arm and moving his head with his eyes open in the New Jersey town of Linden, according to ABC News footage.
“Once they picked up the bag, they seemed incredulous they had actually picked this up off the street and they walked off with it”, Boyce said.
“We have no reason to believe they are connected”.
The law enforcement officials said at least one of Rahami’s relatives was in the vehicle, which appeared headed toward Kennedy Airport in NY after coming from New Jersey. The cell phone on the pressure cooker in Manhattan provided clues that led to Rahmani’s identification.
And on Sunday night, a backpack with multiple bombs inside was found in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
An explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood of NY on Saturday, September 17, 2016. More officers joined in a battle that spilled into the street. Investigators said they are still gathering evidence on those bombs and have not publicly tied Rahami to those devices.
The suit was settled in 2012 in the city’s favor, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage told reporters.
Officials are trying to understand how and why Rahami, who emigrated to the U.S.as a child, allegedly became radicalized.
– Rahami traveled for extended periods to Afghanistan and Pakistan in the last five years, officials said.
That same year, Rahami filed a petition to bring his wife to the United States. Messages left for family members were not immediately returned.
In 2011, the family sued the city and its police department, alleging discrimination and harassment against Muslims stemming from disputes over the restaurant’s hours. Investigators say by this time, he began displaying a harder pro-jihad mentality.
Substantial police presence notwithstanding, life in NY appears to have returned to normal.
The White House said President Barack Obama was briefed throughout the night and early on Monday on the investigation.
In response to the weekend’s attacks, the former secretary of state said it was “crucial that we continue to build up trust between law enforcement and Muslim-American communities”.
