Instead, Ferrell took the opportunity to pitch himself as Colbert’s new animal expert.

Colbert’s Super Bowl Late Show was broad and fun like most post-Super Bowl programming, and was likely meant to appeal to the widest audience possible. Ferrell showed off Mulan, a “short-spined Peruvian mongoose” that looked a lot like a small kitten and Kayak, a “Mongolian bush tiger” that may have been a guinea pig.

The president appeared in a pre-taped segment that Colbert initially pretended was live.

After announcing the night’s guests, Colbert pretended to toss a football to an Army Lieutenant Colonel in Kandahar, who joked that they had watched Super Bowl 50 nine hours ago, and revealed their seven-layer dip recipe.

He threw the ball first to Afghanistan, then the International Space Station, where it ended up in the hands of Chewbacca, who tossed it back to Colbert.

The segment ended with Obama throwing a football in the White House… much to the chagrin of his wife, Michelle Obama.

Later in the broadcast, Colbert welcomed Kelly and immediately asked the cable news host why Fox News was feuding with Donald Trump. “But he does have a beef with me”.

“I wouldn’t “ooh” and “ahh” when you hear about what she is”, Ferrell warned the fawning crowd. She then jokingly added that she would start with “apology accepted”.

Ferrell did bring along a few animal to the post Super Bowl show.
