Obama, Trump to set differences aside for awkward White House meeting

What makes me a little unusual is that I am a Republican who was voting for a Democrat for president for the first time since 1976. “We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead”, Clinton, the Democratic nominee, said in a concession speech in NY before noon on Wednesday, joined by her husband, former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea. “We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country”, he had said.

President Barack Obama meets with President-elect Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

Obama described it as an “excellent conversation” and “wide-ranging” conversation – from how to set up a White House staff to foreign and domestic policy.

President Obama has shown in recent days that the best way to work for the American people is to give Donald Trump the kind of support, moral and intellectual, that every president needs.

Both Obama and Trump sought to change the bitter election tone right after Trump’s unexpected election victory.

Taking the stage to cheers, Trump said Clinton had called him to offer her congratulations and to concede the race.

“Now, everybody is sad when their side loses an election”.

While Trump noted that he and Obama had never met before, their political histories will forever be linked.

Addressing stricken staff and voters at a New York City hotel, Clinton urged acceptance of Trump’s stunning win after a campaign that appeared poised until Election Day to make her the first woman elected USA president. “We are all on one team”. This is an intramural scrimmage.

Throughout his presidency, Obama was forced to pass legislation on party-line votes or to rely on executive actions after efforts to compromise with congressional Republicans failed.

“We now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed the country succeeds“, Obama said. Mrs. Trump, during her address to the Republican national convention, used lines cribbed from a speech the first lady had once given.

Where some United States newspapers and magazines focused on this newfound cordiality between Obama and Trump, pointing to the momentousness of the moment, some suggested that all was not forgotten, sticking to the former aggressive tone of the campaigns.

Earlier in the day, Trump made waves with an interview in the Wall Street Journal when he said he would consider an “amended” version of Obama’s signature health care law – a shift in position after repeatedly vowing on the campaign trail that he would repeal the measure.

President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has launched a new website and Twitter account as the Republican prepares to take office.

Mexico’s peso plunged to its lowest-ever levels as Trump’s chances of winning the presidency increased.

“Our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transition of power. You work for the American people”.

He had also warned supporters in apocalyptic terms that “the fate of the republic” rested on Clinton defeating Trump on Election Day. He cited William Faulkner in his remarks: “They killed us, but they ain’t whooped us yet!”

“We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought”, Clinton told supporters. “We know that the dreams of empowering families and children remains”. Barack Obama had only two years with control of Congress; George W. Bush had four (plus four months); Bill Clinton, two.

The first lady spent time with Trump’s wife, Melania, as the two men discussed policy challenges and the organizational details of the transition of power.
