Ore. cop shot, killed trying to serve warrant

A police officer was fatally shot while serving an arrest warrant in downtown Seaside Friday night.

According to a report in the Daily Astorian, another officer was able to return fire and strike the assailant, identified as Phillip Ferry.

The suspect was taken to a Clatsop County hospital.

According to police, Ferry resisted arrest and the other officer deployed a taser.

Oregon Senate Bill 111 establishes protocols when a law enforcement agency is involved in an officer-related shooting investigation.

Troopers said Ferry was walking down Broadway and was known by the officers to have a felony warrant for his arrest on assault charges. Both Goodding and the shooter were rushed to a local hospital, but they succumbed to their wounds.

The slain police officer joined the Seaside police department in 2003, and during these 13 years he ran the drug team, worked as a detective sergeant and as a patrol sergeant.

“He was an extraordinarily good police officer”, Bergin said.

Goodding was 39 years old and is survived by his wife and school-aged children.

Goodding had attended Portland State University and coached sports teams in the area of Seaside, a coastal community of about 6,500 residents, state police said.

The Clatsop County Major Crimes Team has been activated. SB 111 mandates a separate agency lead the investigation.

The Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation will assist with the Goodding’s funeral, the date and time of which will be announced when determined.
