Orioles select JU’s Michael Baumann in Major League Baseball draft

The fact is Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft, held since 1965, has produced as many busts as future superstars among the players selected with the No. 1 pick.

Their sixth-round pick, shortstop Mason McCoy of the University of Iowa, was named most valuable player of the Northwoods League last summer and carried it into a strong senior season for the Hawkeyes. He’s the third Gator overall to go, as Alex Faedo found himself a home with the Detroit Tigers in yesterday’s first round.

Under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams are given a set bonus pool they are allowed to spend on the top ten rounds of the draft each year. He was picked by the Twins in the 34th round coming out of Mahtomedi (Minn.) High School, but wound up signing with JU. Based purely on talent, he could have gone five or so picks higher.

“Hall is a polished, young left-handed pitcher, with a good fastball, curve, change-up & good control”, Orioles scouting director Gary Rajsich said.

The Canadian prep out of A.B. Lucas Secondary School is registered at 5-foot-11 at 165 pounds as he prepares to play college baseball at Texas A&M.

Valdosta High School LHP DL Hall was selected 21st overall by the Baltimore Orioles Monday in the MLB Draft. Pineda was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention, a 2015 Underclass Honorable Mention, and a 2016 Underclass second team selection.

Murphy, a recent Fordham University graduate, was 6-7 for the Rams this spring with a 2.59 ERA. His 97 strikeouts in 87.1 IP gave him a strikeout rate of 1.1 strikeouts per inning. An injury cut his 2017 season short as the Orland Park, Illinois, native appeared in just two games, recording a pair of strikeouts against Seton Hall (Feb. 18).
