Fleming, a New England Patriots linebacker who cut his leg during the rescue operation last Thursday, says he then did what anyone who plays for Bill Belichick would do in such a situation – worry about how his coach would react to the injury.
According to The Boston Globe, Fleming witnessed the three-car accident on Route 1 near Gillette Stadium while driving home from practice Thursday night.
Fleming played last Saturday vs. the Chiefs with 22 stitches in his leg because he rescued a women from a burning auto.
“She was kicking the window and it wasn’t doing much damage, so (I kicked it through) and I pulled her out”, he told the Herald. The Patriots’ trainers patched him up at Gillette, and he then went to a hospital for stitches.
“Once I saw my leg was bleeding pretty bad, I was like ‘You’re good, let me go make sure I’m alright because I got a game coming up, ‘” Fleming said.
Two days later, Fleming was forced into action when Patriots linebackers Jamie Collins and Jerod Mayo left the game with injuries. “I didn’t think much of it, I thought she was trying to get out of the auto, then I realized the smoke was building up inside the vehicle”.
As the New England Patriots prepare for the AFC Championship game, one of the team’s players is already receiving accolades.
Fleming’s agent, Andy Simms, called Fleming a hero. “Darius has been a standup guy since he got here, and when I heard the story I wasn’t surprised at all”, Slater said.
“I saw her panic on her face”, Fleming told reporters in the Patriots dressing room on Wednesday. “It’s just, I was there”.
“We have great guys around here, no matter the time”, defensive captain Devin McCourty said Wednesday.
Like Wilfork before him, Fleming said he didn’t think he did anything special. “It’s definitely somebody that you want in a situation like that, to kick in windows and taking stitches”.
