Paul Ryan defends GOP health bill after CBO report

In the clip published by Breitbart, Ryan lamented the seeming inevitability of a Hillary Clinton presidency, telling his members to “do what you think is best and do what you feel you need to do”.

The Wisconsin Republican says the Congressional Budget Office analysis does not take into account additional steps the GOP-led Congress and Trump administration would take to lower costs and increase choices.

“Trumpcare would be a nightmare for the American people”, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said at a news conference at the Capitol with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California. And obviously a lot has happened since then.

He added, “I think they sort of overestimate the uninsured number, just like they overestimated who would be insured by Obamacare, but I do believe that if we’re not going to force people to buy something they don’t want to buy, they won’t buy it, and that’s kind of obvious”. “But at this point there’s nearly no way to see it passing”.

The White House realizes that it must win over numerous objectors. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul told “Face the Nation” he thinks the president is willing to negotiate.

“Even before the CBO released its score, it was clear to all that Trumpcare would reduce access for those most in need while providing billions in tax breaks for the wealthy”, said Boyle in a statement.

Since the 2010 law, better known as Obamacare, kicked into full gear on January 1, 2014, at least 20 million Americans, including 5 million Californians, gained insurance coverage, majority through a provision that expands Medicaid – called Medi-Cal in California.

The plan, however, is facing opposition not only from Democrats but conservative Republicans.

The four sent a letter arguing that a draft of Ryan’s bill did not “adequately protect” Medicaid; Ryan’s bill wound up including steep cuts to the program.

The Republican plan replaces income-based subsidies with age-based tax credits, targets the Medicaid expansion, defunds Planned Parenthood and eliminates insurance mandates in favor of a 30 percent penalty imposed by insurance companies for people who let their coverage lapse. Alaska, Murkowski’s state, stands to lose the most under these changes.

Meanwhile, Tom Cotton, the Republican from Arkansas, on ABC’s “This Week”, expressed his concerns about the bill.

DICKERSON: Let me – but you said you ran on this.

On Monday the Congressional Budget Office is expected to release its report analyzing the fiscal efficacy of the legislation.

That’s partly because Ryan’s remarks on the call were widely reported at the time; the recording just makes it possible to hear them. “That’s the new dynamic this brings”, Skelley said.
