Penang striker’s ‘physics-defying’ goal now famous worldwide

Subri’s effort is already being touted as a contender for Fifa’s “Puskas Award” for best goal of the year.

You’ll probably be rubbing your eyes in amazement after watching this gravity-defying free kick from Malaysian soccer player Mohd Faiz Subri.

Such swerve has arguably not been seen since Roberto Carlos’s famous strike for Brazil against France in the Tournoi de France in 1997.

The award was named in honour of Ferenc Puskás, a Real Madrid striker in the late 1950s and 1960s, and a central member of the highly successful Hungarian side from the same era.

Subri struck the ball with such ferocity that after the ball initially went in one direction, it swerved the other and whipped into the top corner of the net.

Commenting on the free kick at the media conference, the 28-year-old player regarded the goal resulting from the very attractive free kick as his good luck.

The freekick has awed football-crazy Malaysians, local political figures and foreign publications.

Mohd Faiz himself did not expect his action on video scoring the goal from a free kick would become viral worldwide.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (centre) presenting the cheque to Faiz who’s holding his son, Alif Fayyadh, with his wife, Nitzawanis Hashim next to him.

“Cannot get enough of Penang player Faiz Subri’s wonder goal that helped brighten up the Malaysian footballing scene”, he said on Facebook.

Primadunia Alexis, via her twitter handle @myrahana_ said: “I bet every Penang fan will be so proud of Faiz Subri right now. He sliced that ball beautifully”. News of the goal has reached America.
