A good example is if Saquon Barkley fell to the Chiefs at 54th overall, there is no way they’d take him over a top defensive lineman or cornerback who fell. Again, you can get scared off of him because he’s tall, but I’m not caught up in how tall you are.
Let’s take a look at a mock draft for the Browns for all nine of their selections, where Allen is the top overall pick in the class…
Barkley is extra valuable and appealing as a back who can stay on the field in passing downs; he had 54 receptions for 632 yards last season. “You grow up as a little kid dreaming of playing in the NFL“. I’ve heard the coaches like Allen. I could see him developing into the guy and the Ravens have time to wait. One of the best Giants players ever, Hall of Fame linebacker/pass-rusher Lawrence Taylor, was picked at that spot in 1981 by the great Giants GM George Young. Barkley is regarded as the best player of the draft by many. No other Sooner athlete, past or present, has appeared that many times over that short a span in the almost 63 years the popular sports magazine has been in existence. If Darnold is available at No. 2, it changes the equation for the Giants.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Giants management likes two quarterbacks and Saquon Barkley the most and will likely keep the pick.
Scouts/coaches on Darnold: “He has the makeup that you like.”. “If you’re willing to wait a year or two, there is some magic in him.”.
As for those top non-QBs from which the Giants could choose in Round 1, the running back vs. defensive end debate is interesting. He’s that good a player, and the Giants are insane about him. “Better prospect than Zeke and Fournette.”. It’s possible now, more than ever, is the time to take a shot on a player like Allen because so few college programs run anything resembling an National Football League offense. Who am I to argue? “We know he will be a resounding success for any team fortunate enough to select him”. The Jets need to exploit their wide receiver advantage right out of the gate, and all three rookies have stronger arms than both Bridgewater and McCown. It doesn’t with the Giants and their ownership group. “He’s confident, tough, poised and a leader.”.
Cleveland already has its quarterback. They never play under center (Allen did). He’s at a position of need, edge rusher for them.
Scouts/coaches on Chubb: “He’s solid”. His very similar to Falcons linebacker Deion Jones, who is known for his pass coverage ability. He seems to be the only thing holding the Giants back from a trade back, but he falls into their laps thanks to the Browns. Personnel guys, not so much. For Allen, it is his huge arm and how he can throw on the move. That means it’s vital for the New York Giants to make the right decision.
Teams like Chicago, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and San Francisco can potentially get a franchise-altering talent in the back end of the top end. To wit, Allen also completed passes at a higher clip on third down than Josh Rosen. “Huge upside.”. “Can be special.”. “After two years of going without a running back in the first round we’ve had this influx of talent”.
Although he will likely still put up big numbers through his next contract, injury issues might start to occur as he moves into his mid/late thirties.
Scouts/coaches on Nelson: “He’s relentless.”.
