Christopher Morris, a longtime contract photographer for the magazine, was photographing a small throng of protesters who were being removed from the event when he became involved in a verbal spat with a security agent.
A video shows that Morris swore at a Secret Service agent who tried to move Morris back into the pen.
He said the questioner in the earlier interview had asked about Duke and various “other groups, ” saying he had difficulty with an earpiece he was wearing for the phone-in interview and didn’t want to disavow groups whose identity he didn’t know.
Another video posted on YouTube showed Morris being led outside by uniformed police. Witnesses said Morris was slammed to the ground, and Morris told reporters the security officer grabbed his neck and briefly choked him during the takedown.
Trump shouted, “Is it fun being at a Trump rally?”
The reporter, Perticone, published additional video on Twitter which he says occurred moments before the interaction between the security guard and Morris “got physical”.
Video of the confrontation appears to show the guard grab Morris by the neck and force him to the ground after the testy exchange. Trying to explain what happened, Morris said he never touched the agent, but was quickly arrested and taken into custody.
During the rally, Trump mocked one of many protesters who interrupted the billionaire’s rant about illegal immigration and Mexico.
Unlike other presidential campaigns, which generally allow reporters and photographers to move around at events, Trump has a strict policy requiring reporters and cameramen to stay inside a gated area, which the candidate often singles out for ridicule during his speeches.
A rep for Trump’s campaign says they are aware of the incident but do not have all of the details.
As black protesters were escorted from the rally, the crowd around them began to chant, “All lives matter”.
Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said the agency was aware of the incident involving one of its employees but it still working to “determine the exact circumstances that led up to this incident”.
“You’re going to hear it once”, Trump told the protesters on Monday.
