Finally, let’s not forget that while the Oculus Rift, and the HTC Vive by extension, demands premium PC hardware for the processing power necessary to run virtual reality, the PlayStation VR is paired with Sony‘s current PS4 console, which now retails for just $350, or approximately the same price as one Nvidia GTX 970 computer graphics card. We’re not expecting, say, Fallout VR, but if those wanting an Oculus Rift are to be tided over by the mobile device then it needs a killer app that’s worth buying the device for.
The Gear VR is also far more affordable than Oculus Rift, costing only $159 compared to $600 of the former.
In addition, the exec revealed that 200 developers are signed up to work on PlayStation VR. If anything, the PlayStation VR has had the strongest showing of all. He talked specifically about how many titles are being developed for PSVR. Besides this, there’s no guarantee that these titles are going to be exclusive to the Playstation VR headset; it’s likely developers will be working across all the platforms in order to reach the widest platform possible.
Recently, a research group known as SuperData has released a new report that predicts how well the VR Industry will do this year. More importantly, though, is the fact that Sony and Oculus have basically been playing a game of chicken, seeing which company would blink first when it comes to a price point.
The Oculus Rift package will come with the headset, a remote, one Xbox One controller, a sensor and two games.
Sony have been quick to dismiss the pricing on Amazon with a statement saying: “This was an error by Amazon, we haven’t announced price for PlayStation VR“.
Amazon Canada made some waves yesterday when they had a listing for PlayStation VR with a price, though still sans a release date.
The low end of SuperData’s price projection for the PlayStation VR would be right in line with the costs of current gen consoles.
