A family in La Loche, Saskatchewan, pay their respects to the victims of the school shooting.
Witnesses said the shooter had a shotgun and the acting mayor of La Loche, Kevin Janvier, told CTV News that the alleged gunman was a young man under 21 and a student at the school.
Adam Wood, 35, had also just started work at the school in September as a teacher.
The call came in to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) offices at around 1p.m. on Friday January 22, police said. “I thought the kids were just playing around or something, like a locker slamming and stuff”.
He planned to visit La Loche on Sunday and promised to provide crisis support and counseling services. “We feel sadness and remorse but rarely do we use that to fuel change”, Wood’s family said in a statement.
La Loche is a mainly aboriginal community of about 3,000 people. A second road leads to Fort McMurray, Alta., but it crosses ice and is only available in winter.
There’s one road from the south and most of the year, it’s a six-hour drive to Prince Albert. She said the government will consult the community about the school’s future, after local politicians called for it to be demolished.
“We need to make sure that in this particular community, the feeling of security is recreated in a solid, long-lasting way”, said Goodale. “While the lockdown was happening, you could just hear all these gunshots getting closer, [then] getting distant”.
Bellegarde pointed out several areas of concern, including a dearth of youth programs and wellness centres.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare”, Trudeau said.
The annual suicide rate in the Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority, which includes the northwestern communities of La Loche, Buffalo Narrows and Ile a la Crosse, is the highest of any health authority in Saskatchewan.
Police say the 17-year-old was killed at a home before the shooting at the school.
In those eight minutes, two victims were fatally shot.
Dayne Fontaine, 17, and Drayden Fontaine, 13 were found dead at a residence in a residence in the community.
A teacher and a teacher’s aide were shot at the high school in the northern Saskatchewan community.
He faces four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of attempted murder and unauthorised possession of a firearm.
Police arrested the teen, who can not be publicly named under Canadian law because he is under 18, on Friday after a shooting at a high school and home in remote La Loche, Saskatchewan, about 600 km (375 miles) northwest of Saskatoon.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Meadow Lake Provincial Court on Monday.

“There are many tremendously generous people here, so… the story is much more than this in La Loche”. He said the accused was a nice person who he didn’t think was capable of violence.
“But we tell them that they have to leave to seek employment, find opportunities”. She said she doesn’t think destroying the building would help. Rather than looking for someone to blame, or listening to outsider opinions on why this happened, people should look to the leaders and members of the community.
The liquor store in La Loche has been closed since Friday afternoon’s shooting and that will remain the case for the rest of this week.
