On Thursday, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr. said investigators believe Marcotte fought her killer and left him with possible cuts, scratches or bruises.
Early says investigators believe the attack happened Sunday between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
“Her assailant, we know, was a man”, Early said Thursday at an afternoon press conference. “These injuries specifically are scratches, scrapes and/or bruises“.

The body of a 27-year-old Google employee, Vanessa Marcotte, was found nude and burned in a wooded area in Princeton, Massachusetts just four hours after going for a jog.
Police closed Brooks Station Road between Ball Hill Road and Radford Road from early Sunday evening until about 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
Marcotte, of New York City, was home visiting her family.
He asked anyone who had seen any vehicles driving or parked on Brooks Station Road, near the location where Marcotte’s body was found, to come forward.
Sources have told NBC 4 NY sister station NECN that Marcotte’s body was found naked and had been partially burned.
“We’re still approaching this from every angle”. She worked at two MA marketing companies before moving to NY.
People in town held a vigil on Tuesday night to honor Marcotte and show support for her family.
“People are traumatized”, resident Diane Featherstone told the Globe.
“We are concerned about the safety of our townspeople and the visitors that enter our town”, she said.
Marcotte graduated with honors in 2011 from Boston University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in communications. Authorities haven’t yet revealed how Marcotte died, but an autopsy had been performed on her body. He has urged Princeton’s residents to take an “abundance of caution”.
