Police officer killed, sheriff’s deputy dies during Florida manhunt

A massive manhunt for Loyd continued Tuesday, a day after an Orlando police master sergeant was shot and killed. She had been trying to take him into custody.

Loyd is also wanted in connection with the murder of his pregnant girlfriend, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

After Clayton was shot, many of her colleagues immediately joined the pursuit; among them was a sheriff’s Deputy First Class Norman Lewis, who died when he was thrown from his motorcycle in an accident.

“We don’t go home”, he said. For fellow officers, it’s a personal mission. When Clayton approached him, police say the career criminal shot her several times. Loyd was not believed to have been hit.

Clayton was married with a college-age son.

“I’m numb, grief-stricken”, says Orlando Commissioner Regina Hill.

“She touched lives doing her job. Her family is devastated”, explained Young.

Said Scott, “It breaks my heart that one of them was already senselessly killed this morning”.

The owner of the strip club told Eyewitness News that the officers told him they got a tip that Loyd may have been at the club.

After the fatal shooting of the police officer, over a dozen Orlando-area schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. It received almost 11,000 tips past year and paid out $168,000 in rewards.

The deputy, who was not identified, was on his motorcycle when a vehicle turned in front of him, Sheriff Jerry Demings said. He ditched that second vehicle shortly after and ran into an apartment complex, Mina said.

Loyd then carjacked another vehicle, drove away and then abandoned the vehicle not far away, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Every lead is being vigorously pursued”, she said.

“Mayan did so with the intent that Markeith Demangzlo Loyd avoid or escape detection, arrest, trial or punishment”, the arrest affidavit said, according to the AP. Authorities are offering a $60,000 reward.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Markeith Loyd to call them.
