President Trump’s address to Congress

Nor did he express much interest in the details of policymaking.

He outlined the bold plans during his first address to a joint session of the House and Senate of the American Congress Tuesday (28 February) night.

Guests chosen by the president and his opponents in Congress underscore ideological differences. That will say a lot on how serious he is about making such a move.

If history is any guide, Republicans will be disappointed. Prominent Republican Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham have both criticized Trump’s policies and are holding a town hall at Clemson University on Wednesday. There should be a transition for people now on Affordable Care Act plans, he said, and access to coverage for people who have pre-existing medical conditions.

The message from that pair of responses will be that the Democrats don’t have to choose between two groups – minorities and others that have been marginalized historically, and white working-class voters who delivered a victory to Trump.

On tax reform, the president has promised massive cuts, but waffled on how the federal government will make up for the lost revenue. Budget director Mick Mulvaney has said Trump will propose reallocating $54 billion in the budget from various agencies to help fund a military buildup. In addressing the joint session, the president is finally telling congressmen/women and senators about the policies his administration aims to enact, to their faces. They shouldn’t hold their breath.

Is Trump a tax cutter or a tax reformer? There’s nothing to love about your family having health insurance?

“I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t get a bump out of this”, Wicker said. Saying “Nobody knew health care could be so complicated” and walking away from the podium isn’t going to resolve anything.

“The new plan will be a great plan for the patients, for the people, and hopefully for the companies”, he said in public comments before the meeting. “The speech will likely resemble a SOTU that delivers an “‘optimistic vision’ for the nation”, according to a White House document obtained by POLITICO.

Sen. Roger Wicker, Republican from MS, told C-SPAN in Statuary Hall that the speech was better than Trump’s inaugural and his convention speech. Just a month into his presidency, Trump is expected to give a speech that highlights his view of the successes he and his administration have made so far.

Now let’s be clear: Republicans don’t actually have to be told how to vote by someone who had to determine whether Snooki should stay in the boardroom a couple years ago.

But the period of executive orders is over. His track record there, too, is mixed. They want Trump to use his political capital and provide cover for them.

What do you think of the videos and the reactions? That might be enough for the president, for now. And what he’s promising to do is very challenging for the Republican Party. But governance has never been Trump’s strong suit.

His words got him as close as he’s been since he started.
