Protesters blocked from entering Senate debate

November 04 00:02 2016

Despite all the issues facing the person Louisiana will elect to fill an empty seat in the U.S. Senate, candidates in the race – and a crowd outside the debate all – focused mostly on the presence of former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke. The University offered the venue, and organizers of the debate closed it to the public and students. “I think David Duke was a catalyst for a broader conversation about how their institution and our city at large sort of view people of color”.

After hours of protesting, many were confronted by police after the school allowed Duke on the historically black campus.

At no time did Dillard discourage protests; either by students or members of the community. Sam Barton and around 30 other students from Tulane University protested, too. “I understand that. I just believe that our brand and what we do on a day-to-day basis is bigger than that”. And in his ugly exploitation of the debate stage in Louisiana on Wednesday night, he got what he wanted: headlines like Donald Trump. She told them, “Yes, there’s one, his name is David Duke“. “Your administration let the white devil on your campus”.

Cries of “Let us in!” were met with police pepper spraying protestors who attempted to gain access to the University’s auditorium, one report said.

Duke addressed the protests during the debate, and in a final move, he used his closing statement to condemn them. In 1980, Duke left the KKK to create the National Association for the Advancement of White People, a white nationalist organization.

Inside the auditorium, Duke did what he usually does.

Duke hijacked the stage for about five minutes after that, sometimes screaming at the moderator, who he called a “typical media hack”, for cutting him off.

Asked by the moderator to explain a blog post he wrote about “CNN Jews“, Duke replied, “There is a problem in America with a very strong, powerful tribal group that dominates our media, dominates our global banking”.

“I am not opposed to all Jews”.

Inside the debate room, Duke criticized Jews and the Black Lives Matter movement. While Trump eventually disavowed Duke’s support, Duke continues to try to align himself with the Republican presidential candidate, echoing his complaints of a political system dominated by elites, as well as his strident criticism of Clinton. Though I disagree with almost everything about Trump’s campaign, it’s not nearly as bad as the message behind Duke’s.

Duke also had choice words for Hillary Clinton, bypassing the calls to simply “Lock her up” often heard at Trump events and going straight to the death penalty.

David Duke, 66, who is running for Louisiana Senate only became eligible to participate in the televised debate in New Orleans in late October. Under Louisiana law, the two candidates who receive the most votes will continue on to a runoff election.
