Protestors bring shouts, placards to Trump’s inauguration celebration

As Donald Trump’s election victory was cemented during celebratory inauguration events in the nation’s capital, the dissent and divisive discord his campaign produced was evident on the streets of Washington DC as throngs of protesters arrived to disrupt proceedings.

Another protest is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on the corner of Broadway and Olympic Boulevard in downtown. USA Today reports that two police officers were injured in the clash.

In Boyle Heights, a protest of Trump’s inauguration will begin at 11 a.m. with a rally in Mariachi Plaza, according to a news release from event organizers.

Police dressed in riot gear then used pepper spray and “other control devices” to try and quell the chaos.

Dozens of witnesses watched the arrests from the sidewalk.

“When I think of you, President-elect Trump, I am reminded of another great leader God chose thousands of years ago in Israel”, Jeffress, a Trump supporter, reportedly said. For a while, security officers let attendees bypass the metal barriers to avoid having to push through the crowd of undulating dancers.

Yvonne Gonzalez watched the arrests from a nail salon. “I’m so angry, and I need to be around people who are also angry”, she said. “The fact that we can’t even walk or speak our rights without the police always jumping at us”.

The protest was organized by unions such as the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), as well as community-based groups like the Texas Organizing Project (TOP).

Those who made it past the protesters appeared unfazed.

“Give the guy a chance”, said Chris Ratliff. The demonstrators tried, mostly successfully, to drown him out with whistles and chants of “Make America gay again” and “God is queer”. “We expected this kind of thing from this kind of group, and they’re going to be held accountable”, said Peter Newsham, the interim chief of policesaid.
