Puerto Rico braces for wave of mosquito-borne Zika virus

February 28 21:13 2016

This is not a new virus.

But a case report published this week in the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases suggests that Zika may cause even greater harm than previously suggested. Since 2015, however active transmission of the virus has spread to Brazil and many other countries. They targeted pro-life countries in Latin America, using the virus to push for more abortions.

The DPHHS Zika website has detailed information on preventions, signs and symptoms of the illness and a list of Zika-affected areas.

The symptoms of Zika are described as “cold-like” and often mild in adults. All got the virus while visiting or living in places with Zika outbreaks.

The test can result in false positives if the person is infected with another related virus such as dengue fever.

The Zika virus is spreading and it will reach the United States, it is just a matter of time. With the warmer months the mosquito population will increase and so will your chances of getting Zika.

Only one out of every five people infected with Zika show any symptoms, and even those who fall ill usually do not suffer severe symptoms.

Tom Frieden said Puerto Rico is clearly the most affected area, with the potential for hundreds of thousands of cases of the virus. Nurse Practitioner, Angela Jackson, with North Florida Women’s Care Obstetrics and Gynecology is aware of the virus and informs her patients to take precautions if they decide to travel. The virus can also be spread from person to person through sexual transmission and blood transfusions.

Zika is suspected of causing microcephaly, a debilitating birth defect in which the brain and skull do not develop fully.

The infected woman, however, is not pregnant and recovering well while at low risk of any complications, said the French minister of social affairs, health and women’s rights, Marisol Touraine, on Saturday.

“I travel a lot for my photography business and I thought about taking a break since the recent findings of the Zika virus in pregnant women”.

“We need to consider the cost and not waste millions of dollars on procedures without hard evidence”, he said, adding that the ministry would also keep tabs on the CDC recommendations. That includes advice that Zika-infected men who have pregnant partners use condoms or abstain from sex.

First it is important to note that the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is not local to Ohio. “How is the CDC working with EPA and others to ensure that pesticide products are registered and available for use as tools in addressing this public health situation?” She wears trousers and long-sleeved shirts, has shuttered a windows in her home and drenches herself in repellent each few hours.
