January thaws are the stuff of New England weather folklore.
Today’s ensemble runs support the idea that Saturday will offer a period of winter weather.
Colder air will move in over the weekend and so will a few areas of precipitation. A tenth to quarter of an inch ice is likely with higher amounts up to a half inch possible closer to I-44. Night into Thurs. Morning.

Temperatures are now in the mid 60s with strong southerly winds sustained at 20 miles per hour and gusts up to 30 miles per hour. Initially the precipitation will fall as snow, sleet or freezing rain before eventually transitioning over to rain overnight.
Tonight.Rain mainly before midnight. Then a wintry mix overnight. The bigger story in Central Illinois was the wind with several locations reporting wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour. Chance of precip 100%. Also watch for icy spots as you step out the door early tomorrow morning. Peeks of sunshine later. Don’t expect much of a cool down tonight. the low will drop about 3 degrees to 47 by Wednesday morning. Low 13F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 miles per hour. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56.
Friday: Sun and clouds.
Temperatures will slowly get closer to normal today, in the mid 30s. Understandably, travel conditions later Sunday through Monday could be very hazardousat times and forecasts should bemonitored closely.
After near-record high 60s on Wednesday, colder air will filter in for Thursday and last through the weekend. M.L.King Day Freezing rain before 11am, then rain.
Light snow returns for Saturday with high temperatures near 30 degrees. Highs will be in the mid 40s.
