The trade is somewhat of a surprise move for New England considering the chemistry he quickly developed with Brady. The Patriots will receive the Rams’ first- and sixth-round draft picks. The juiciest – but most unlikely – is the Patriots trading those two first-rounders for Odell Beckham Jr., meeting the ransom the Giants reportedly want for the mercurial receiver.
Day 1 of the NFL Draft is April, 26. That said, Cooks will beg the question, and reasonably so, whether the pick lost at No. 23 is too high given what LA still needs. As a member of the Patriots, Cooks played in all 16 games last season, tallying 65 receptions for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns.
After losing Sammy Watkins in free agency, it became apparent that Snead wasn’t intent with drafting a young receiver.
That leaves a team like the 49ers, who may look to counter the numerous offseason moves made by the Rams, as a potential trade partner.
The #BrandinCooksSmearCampaign has already begun…
The Bills still have a stronger collection of draft picks to work with, but the Patriots aren’t far behind.
As for Cooks being dealt to the Rams, he is now in the final-year of his current contract after the Patriots picked up his fifth-round option a year ago following them acquiring him in a March 2017 trade with the New Orleans Saints. Let us know in the comments!
The market for wide receivers has skyrocketed this offseason.
That might not sit well with either of their camps, given how valuable they were to the team in 2017.
The 23rd overall pick will be the Patriots’ highest in the draft since 2012, when they selected Chandler Jones 21st overall. The Patriots would have been happy to have him back in 2018, but this deal was obviously sparked, in part, by assessing the chances to retain him after his contract expired following this season. What the Rams have that the Eagles don’t is the best running back in football and arguably the best defensive player in Aaron Donald.
The reason the Patriots traded Cooks was because they weren’t going to be able to re-sign him next offseason.
The Rams have dominated the headlines during the National Football League off-season, and their acquisition of Brandin Cooks is a definitive upgrade over former #1 wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
– They don’t have as much insurance at wide receiver – yet.
For now, they don’t have that insurance heading into the 2018 season.
